Devil's Food Cupcakes

Have you seen Julie & Julia? I saw it last weekend with my daughter, and I loved it! The story of Julie Powell blogging her way through Mastering The Art of French Cooking was interesting, especially to me as a blogger. But, the story of Julia Child played by Meryl Streep was my favorite part. I would have enjoyed the story of Julia Child even without Julie Powell’s story. Julia’s relationship with her husband Paul was shown beautifully in the movie. And, Meryl Streep embodied Julia Child. Meryl was amazing in this movie! If you get a chance, go see this refreshing movie.

Coconut Cupcakes

The pictures I’ve posted are the last two batches of cupcakes my daughter made from Martha Stewart's Cupcakes before school started again. I’m afraid it will be awhile before she has the chance to bake again. I am sad my daughter doesn’t have the time to bake right now, but my diet is relieved. Both cupcakes were delicious and rich. My son loved the dark rich Devil’s Food Cupcakes, and I loved the Coconut Cupcakes.

I’m Dreaming of a Cupcake Summer

I’m not really dreaming of a cupcake summer, I’m actually living it. My daughter has been very busy with Les Miserables rehearsals in the evenings, but her days have been mostly free of obligation. So what has she been doing with her days? She has been working her way through Martha Stewart’s Cupcake book. We have been enjoying her cupcake adventures. I just hope my winter clothes still fit.

Blueberry Cupcakes

She made Blueberry Cupcakes for 4th of July. These cupcakes were delicate with a light and fresh whipped cream frosting. We added raspberries to complete our red, white and blue theme.

Mini Trifle Cakes

Next she made the Mini Trifle Cakes (This recipe came from the Cupcake Doctor cookbook not Martha). My daughter made these to go with the Barbeque Ribs. These cakes tasted delicious after the ribs.

Raspberry Marble Cheesecakes

Raspberry Marble Cheesecakes were the next “cupcake” adventure. These were so good—The perfect cheesecake bite.

Snickerdoodle Cupcakes

We hadn’t even finished the Raspberry Marble Cheesecakes when she made Snickerdoodle cupcakes with the most delicious frosting. The frosting tasted like smooth and creamy marshmallows. Yum.

And, she isn’t finished yet. I think she plans to make the Peanut Butter and Chocolate cupcakes next. I’ll let you know.

Cupcakes

Sunday was a beautiful spring day, so we decided to go on a field trip. I have wanted to see the store Tyler Florence opened in Mill Valley for a while now, so we headed across the Golden Gate Bridge to check it out. Tyler’s store was interesting. No, he wasn’t in the shop while we were there, but I will share our visit to his store in another post.

We had lunch at Pearl’s Fat Burger. My avocado burger was the best burger I’ve had in a long time. Across the street from Pearl’s is the Frosting Bake Shop, which specializes in cupcakes. The inside of the shop is brightly painted with pink and orange stripes, and black and white polka dots. The cupcakes are charmingly displayed in covered cake stands, and they came in really fun flavors—Black and White, Red Velvet, Chocolate Obsession, 24 Carrot, Juliana Banana, Lemon Twist, Razzleberry, Willie Vanillie, Cookies and Cream, ummMocha, and Peanut Butter Bliss. Did you guess which flavor I tried?

While I enjoyed my cupcake immensely, I really liked the cake bites. I told you about cakeballs in my last post. Well, cake bites are Frosting’s cakeballs. They make cake bites by mixing cake and frosting into balls, and then dipping the balls into chocolate. The flavor of the cake bites is remarkable. The cake bites reminded me a little of truffles, but they were lighter and less dense. The shop does mail order if you want to try cake bites without making a batch of cake balls.
